Travel Tips and Pointers

Share your traveling tips and experiences here. Tell everyone about a place that they absolutely must visit and things that they should do while they are there. Also share those not good experiences so that PCV's stay away from the run down shabby joints that might not be safe and secure.

South Africa:

  • Clarens- This cute little artsy town is located about 1 and half hours drive north of the border of Lesotho. It is an ideal location for volunteers and others to relax and unwind. The prices are a little steep but totally worth it. Lots of restaurants but many self catering options also available. Places to stay: We stayed at the Alberry Cottages that were really nice. We even had our own private spa tub! The prices were R 200 P/P and on the weekends in the upper room they require a minimum of R 500. But it was totally worth it. Check out the website www.go.clarens.co.za for more information or you can e-mail me at jason.samuelian@gmail.com
  • Oudtshoorn- This town is a little ways off the Garden Route but a Baz Bus side-stop. It is the place to see our loveable aviary friends the ostriches and the capital city of those old-timey ostrich barons. If you want to see the Cango Caves, buy a feather duster or, even,  ride an ostrich…this is the place to go. I highly recommend Paradise Backpackers; they will set you up with all the little 'round town activities for nice, discount prices. Contact information can be found in Coast to Coast.
  • Cape Town - A great and affordable place to stay is Long Street Backpackers. Located in the city centre, its minutes away from Table Mountain and the V&A Waterfront. It is also near great restaurants, bars, and supermarkets. It is the ideal place to feel the vibe of Cape Town.
